Course Description: The fundamental dynamics and issues of adolescence have been covered in the two previous courses. This course will focus primarily on the analysis and discussion of clinical cases. We will concentrate mainly on the book Adolescent Casebook (2022) edited by Novicks, Anna Freud’s students with more than fifty years of experience working with children, adolescents, and their families. The book gathers 19 interesting psychoanalytic treatments of adolescents, nearly half of which will be covered throughout this semester. The book covers pre-puberty through young adulthood from around the world, described in detail and followed by commentaries on each case by different analysts, with a focus on revisions needed on theory and clinical interventions when working psychoanalytically with this age group. The Novicks are specifically preoccupied with involving the parents and seeing the dynamics involved in the family when working with young patients. This approach is offered in many of the cases presented in the book. The pre-requisite for this course is participation in at least one of the previous courses on Adolescence (Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Adolescence I or II) and a good knowledge of the internal difficulties of this developmental period. Participants are expected to study the selected cases, actively participate in discussions, and share their experiences during their own adolescence and those of working with adolescent patients.
