Course Description: This course offers a preliminary overview of the mechanisms of defense when our ego cannot meet the demands of reality. Defense mechanisms are unconscious coping strategies that reduce anxiety generated by perceived threats from the internal or external world. These mechanisms involve psychological tactics brought into play by the unconscious mind to manipulate, deny or distort reality to prevent the ego from collapsing or disintegration. Defense mechanisms protect the mind/self/ego from anxiety or social sanctions and provide a refuge from a situation with which one cannot currently cope. There are healthy defenses that we use throughout life. They become pathological only when their continuous use interferes with our everyday functioning and perception of psychic and social functioning, weakening the individual’s physical and mental health.
